Tile Factory
The old city of Jerusalem contains a treasure of native architecture. through time , and due to unique circumstances, many of these architectural gems have fallen into disrepair. the "tile factory" is one such place. it is the purpose of this project to present ideas and a strategie to salvage the "tile factory" and bring new life to a neglected spot at the heart of our city; the heart of our identity.
An agreement was reached with the owners of the "tile factory" to take over the place for a period of twenty years and in return renovate, rehabilitate and maintain the place and use it for non-commercial purposes.
In light of its location and the cultural value inherent in the buildings architecture it was clear that the renovated site should serve as a cultural entity.
The creation of an artists residence would add to it a functional aspect that is typical of its neighbourhood. by having local and international artists stay, work and exhibit in the residence, the project can foster international cooperation and thus a healthy cultural exchange.
The residence will also give the artists an opportunity to live in the heart of Jerusalem, get to know it intimately, and produce art inspired by this unique experience.
The building will house three living and working quarters for guest-artists, two multi-purpose spaces and a roof garden. the total surface area available is 270 sq. m
